Champion
Trees of the Metroplex (revised
July 2007)
State Regional Forester Courtney Blevins
and Doug Pierson have updated the list of big trees,
Champion
Trees of DFW, dated July 22, 2007. Trees
are sorted by common name with details on the Trunk
Circumference, Crown
Spread, Height, Index, Owner/Location,
Nominator and Championship Status. We have National and State Champions right here
in the Metroplex! (This is a Microsoft Excel file. To save the
file,
right click on file link, select "save file as", then save to your
hard drive.) The original and main web site for the project is at
TexasTreeTrails.org. The database for
the Champion list is online and you can search
for each of the trees from the database
including their first on-line, virtual tour. The
database is a "work in progress" as
they are
adding and updating tree records, with more
recent measurements and photographs. The Tree
Trails team are also working on a similar
database for Historic and Heritage trees for
the DFW Metroplex. This portion of the project
should ready for viewing very soon. A very
exciting project indeed.

Protection Pays Irrigation

By: Helen M. Stone
"No one thinks about tree protection,
especially
the
contractor.
At the
completion
of the
projects
everyone
is shrugging
their
shoulders
and
pointing
fingers.
The
trees
end
up being
the
losers."
If you follow a few simple steps, you should successfully save your most prized specimens.

"Trees play a vital role in our environment, providing food and shelter, helping to cool our surroundings, absorbing pollution, and emitting life-giving atmospheric gases. Their importance is crucial in urban areas and are a resource we often take for granted." |
